Kyrgyzstan hosted the World Nomad Games for the first time in eight years, and only the sixth time they have ever been held. We spent three days at the Games and the rest of the week going properly deep into the country.

The Games are hard to describe to anyone who hasn't been. Horseback wrestling. Goat polo. Eagle hunters. Archery from a galloping horse. Nomadic nations from all over the world in one place, doing what their great grandparents did, in front of a crowd that actually cares.

Somewhere between the opening ceremony and the stands, we turned into a bit of a local attraction ourselves. The Kyrgyz flag came out, the cameras found us, and we ended up on Kyrgyz social media. Not the plan. Not complaining either.

Away from the Games it got better. We rode horses through some of the most ridiculous scenery on the planet. We went to the animal market and bought a goat, which then came with us on the bus. We drank tea in yurts, ate with families, and made real friends with locals along the way.

That is the part you can't book online, and it is the whole reason we go.
